This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Trev, and Kirk discuss the news out of last week’s Pokémon Presents showcase. We also talk about upcoming THQ Nordic titles and the recently announced Red Dead Redemption for the Switch. Is it worth it? We also get into Moving Out 2, Pikmin 4, new staff, magazine orders, and more!

Last week, we chatted about the latest Switch 2 rumors. It’s an exciting time to be a Nintendo fan! But while we wait for a new system to be announced, there’s plenty going on with our fave hybrid console.

Firstly, there’s a whole lot of new Pokémon content to talk about. Whether it’s a new show, upcoming DLC, or classic titles making their way to Switch Online, there’s something for almost everyone. Not to mention Detective Pikachu of course!

Last week it was announced the the classic Western action of Red Dead Redemption is making its way to the Nintendo Switch. It marks the first release of this popular 2010 title on a Nintendo console, but there’s some debate about its high price tag. We give our thoughts on this situation.

Moving Out 2 also hit the Switch this week. Jemma was a fan of the original title, but if you’re not familiar with this crazy multiplayer game, we talk about what it’s like and what makes it so much fun.

That’s a lot to cover, and we hope you enjoy the show! Don’t forget to like and subscribe to the channel, and if you leave a question, we’ll answer it on the next episode.

Until next time, game on everyone!

This Way Madness Lies is a retro-inspired title that combines JRPG elements with a Shakespearean narrative. It may sound like an odd pairing, but whether you’re a budding thespian with anime aspirations or a Sailor Moon aficionado who dabbles in the classics of William Shakespeare, this unique combo has you covered. And yep, it totally works. Hey, to thine own self be true.

This adventure has a lot going for it. Let’s start with the story. It’s pretty bonkers, but it’s also charming, funny, and very tongue-in-cheek. You play the role of Imogen, a student at Stratford-Upon-Avon High. She wields a magical scepter that grants her magical powers, including the ability to teleport between dimensions. She also happens to be part of the school’s drama society. Between rehearsals for their next performance, her crew of wannabe actors forms a superhero-esque group. They go into action by suiting up in classic anime style; hence the earlier Sailor Moon reference.

This Way Madness Lies - Nintendo Switch - screen 1

There’s a fair amount of dialogue, but it’s fast-paced and humorous. There’s also less ye olde English than you might expect, though it’s certainly present. The best part is, if you don’t understand a lick of Shakespeare, a quick tap of a button instantly translates it for you. Not only does this help out anyone struggling with those tricky phrases, it’s also translated in such a clever way that I found myself flicking back and forth every time just to see what they would say in modern English. It’s a unique mechanic that’s cleverly used.

The graphical style is another huge pro; it’s right up my alley. If you, like me, enjoy the 16-bit styling of titles like Secret of Mana, you’ll find yourself equally enamored. It’s not quite as stunning as that 1993 title, but it’s lovely to behold as you traverse various realms. The music is just as enjoyable, with catchy, fast-paced tunes that blend an upbeat anime style with older twinklings reminiscent of Shakespeare’s era. It’s very well done.

This Way Madness Lies - Nintendo Switch - screen 2

The turn-based gameplay is another treat for players of classic titles. Your team attacks or defends by using weapons, magic, or items, then the enemy phase begins. The fun lies in testing different offensive strikes to see what works, with plenty of on-screen stats available to assist. You can also rest your character to replenish any depleted moves. The best part is a special team-up ability that combines your teammates in unique moves that deliver more damage. They’re also just fun to watch.

There are plenty of options to keep players fulfilled in the accessibility department, too. You can save the game at any point, with multiple save spots available. This gives you the opportunity to revisit a previous save state and try a different path. The in-game menu also allows you to change your party’s items and weapons, or even let them have a short conversation. You can also adjust the difficulty setting at any time. One notable absence, though, is a map. It’s not always necessary, but I occasionally found myself wandering in circles during some scenes.

This Way Madness Lies - Nintendo Switch - screen 3

If this sounds amazing, well, it kinda is. And it comes at a budget price, too. Of course, at $9.99, there is a compromise on game length. This isn’t the type of JRPG that will keep you going for weeks or months; it’s more likely to be over within a few nights or over a weekend. That said, it’s an enjoyable time while it lasts.

Overall, This May Madness Lies uniquely blends JRPG elements with the world of William Shakespeare. It has everything going for it, from a humorous story to a wonderful 16-bit styling that smacks of classic ‘90s titles. It may not be the toughest or longest title, but if you’re a fan of anime, Shakespeare, or JRPGs in general, you’ll find enjoyment here.

What’s happening on the Nintendo Switch eShop? Oh, nothing much, just the highly acclaimed Red Dead Redemption making its way to the Big N. This 2010 title is back, bringing its western action to a new audience. It includes the Undead Nightmare DLC as well as other bonus content, and is available from August 17.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for multiplayer mayhem, Moving Out 2 is sure to hit the spot. This sequel to the zany 2020 title comes from Swedish studio DevM Games and Aussie developer SMG Studio. It was a surprise hit at the time, and we can’t wait to see what the sequel brings.

As always, there are plenty of sales to tempt you this week as well. THQ Nordic and Ubisoft feature prominently, but even the original Moving Out is heavily discounted, so we recommend grabbing it while you can.

Super Dinoblasters is a cute indie platformer that follows the adventures of a space ranger on a rescue mission. With visuals and other elements that throw back to the heyday of gaming, is this budget title worth a look on the Nintendo Switch?

The game begins with a short intro to set the scene. You play the role of Galaxy Patrol Bot B3RN1 who answers a distress signal from the dinosaur-ridden planet of Cretacia. The platforming adventure soon begins as you explore this new world, facing off against dinos and collecting coins through about ten levels.

Super Dinoblasters - Nintendo Switch - screen 1

Super Dinoblasters proudly wears its retro stylings on its sleeve. The 8-bit graphics are a dead giveaway, but there are other touches, too. Like the voiceover on the title screen that sounds like an old arcade machine. Or the password you receive after completing each level that allows you to restart from that point. Yes, it’s kind of annoying to enter them in, but that’s what we used to do, kids! It’s a blast from the past, and it adds to the fun and nostalgic experience.

The graphics are deliberately simple, but I enjoyed the changing environments. These add variety to the proceedings, with levels featuring mine carts and slippery ice. The differing backdrops also caught my attention, from underground mines to forests. Simple, yet effective.

I also enjoyed the enemies. These come in the form of various dinosaurs that roam around, from triceratops to brachiosaurus. You sport a nifty laser that doesn’t kill the dinos, it simply puts them to sleep. I love this for two reasons. Firstly, it’s sweet and makes the game more accessible for younger players without the need for violence. Secondly, it adds a factor of danger since the dinos eventually wake up, ready to cause you damage again.

Super Dinoblasters - Nintendo Switch - screen 3

Speaking of danger, this isn’t a particularly hard title. I was able to finish it in around an hour. Levels do vary in length and often feature multiple ways to get to the end. If you explore and take your time, you’ll collect more coins and potentially find a few bonus items, namely four lost astronauts. These hidden areas are fun to discover and add some longevity to proceedings. It’s also important to remember that this is a budget title, coming in at $2.99.

With that budget tag does come some caveats. There are a few minor glitches that send your little astro-bot to weird places within the level, forcing you to restart. They aren’t game breaking by any means, and I only noticed a couple, but they are there.

Super Dinoblasters - Nintendo Switch - screen 2

The other negative for me is the character’s speed. B3RN1’s default movement is SLOW. Thankfully, you can run by double tapping the D-pad, but this is slightly cumbersome. Regardless, the default setting is not ideal, and I ran the whole time. Perhaps I’m too used to Mario’s outing, where I hold down the run button most of the time.

Overall, Super Dinoblasters is a fun little indie platformer that, while not perfect, provides an enjoyable experience at a discount price. The retro throwbacks and visuals are a neat touch, and you can tell a lot of love has been put into development. With some minor tweaks and a speed increase, plus a few more levels, this one has real potential. For now, if you’d like to support an indie developer and you enjoy platformers, give this one a shot.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Kirk, and Trev get into more Pikmin goodness, Disney’s new Illusion Island, classic Zelda titles, and much more!

The highlight of last week’s show was Pikmin 4, and we continue our conversation on this amazing new entry to the series. Trev has also been tinkering with Hey! Pikmin, which actually celebrated its 6gth anniversary on 28 July.

We also discuss two new Nintendo Switch Online entries, namely The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Season and Oracle of Ages. These classic top-down adventures spark an update on our time in Hyrule – what’s that? Did Jemma manage to conquer a temple this week?

We also talk about a pair of new eShop titles that look interesting. Disney Illusion Island is a throwback to Mickey’s classic ’90s platformers with a new aesthetic twist. Meanwhile, Venba is a special-lloking indie title that blends cooking sim gameplay with a deep and emotional narrative.

We round out the show by discussing the games we’re playing at the moment. Trev gives an update on Zen Pinball FX, which seems to have compromised quality for realism in this latest outing. Kirk is playing an RPG called Cross Tails, while Jemma is delving into the Shakespearean-JRPG crossover know as This Way Madness Lies.

That’s a lot to cover, and we hope you enjoy the show! Don’t forget to like and subscribe to the channel, and if you leave a comment or question, we’ll answer it next week.

ProtoCorgi is a side-scrolling shooter for the Nintendo Switch. This colorful title features a robo-pup who takes on a space-based battle to save the world. Let’s find out if this budget title is worth checking out.

First impressions are good. An animated introduction shows us how a simple corgi became a robotic hero. The cute sprites and retro style continue throughout this colorful adventure, which moves along at a rapid pace.

Gameplay is reminiscent of the bullet hell genre, with all manner of robotic creatures and debris coming at you from all angles. It’s tough, but not the hardest title I’ve ever played. The game occasionally works against itself in ways that can be irritating. For example, it’s hard to differentiate between collectibles and enemies at first. Vegetables are good but bones are apparently deadly. Also, some hit detections seem a little off or at least unclear. Touching walls and floors (sometimes) leads to death, despite not appearing spiky, fiery, or in any way dangerous-looking. Once you know, you just avoid them, but it’s a little annoying as a first impression.

As I said, the sprites look great. Most enemies are robotic versions of aquatic creatures, like fish, crabs, and other crustaceans. Some of these are quite cute, especially the little orange fish that strongly remind me of those featured in Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo. Shooting them seemed slightly cold, yet shoot them we must!

While the action doesn’t let up, there are a few design features that keep things interesting. A stark moment of complete red and black colors is a highlight; I wasn’t sure if the game had glitched, but it was actually because of a self-destruct sequence enabled by the enemy. Warnings and other flashes of text are also interesting along the way. Screen movement is also altered, from the typical left–to-right sequence to moments of vertical and even backward movement.

Other moments that stand out are boss fights. Giant mech-like robots, some kind of security droid, and an insectoid are among the big baddies you’ll face at the end of each section. Although these are interesting challenges, they feature an odd design quirk that includes both a health bar and a time limit. My initial thought was to defeat the boss before time ran out, but every time you deplete their energy another phase begins. The difficulty ramps up with each new phase, making it easier to simply dodge everything and run out the clock rather than make your enemy angrier and harder.

On the other hand, your robo-dog doesn’t feature a health bar. Instead, you begin with three lives and one continue. After that, it’s game over and you’re forced to restart. You will unlock an extra life and an extra continue if you make it far enough, but this isn’t made clear. That could put off casual gamers who think the game is too unforgiving upfront.

I don’t mind permadeath, but there are some sections that zapped my lives due to poor level design. In one section, when the screen starts moving backwards, I found myself trapped between walls and lasers with nowhere to go without sacrificing a life. Thankfully, these times were infrequent, but it does make it slightly frustrating when your lives are limited.

Dying also removes any power ups you’ve collected. These are a fun addition to gameplay, with items like homing missiles and lasers that make you much stronger. You can only use these by holding down the attack button, so it eventually becomes more about dodging attacks and steering your pup while your beefed-up weaponry takes care of business.

ProtoCorgi features several modes to keep players busy. The campaign mode is the main game, beginning with a simple tutorial before diving into the action across five sections. After you complete a stage, it becomes available via a separate tutorial mode that lets you practice them one at a time. The most impressive thing about this title, however, is the builder mode.

A budget title that features a creation mode as robust as ProtoCorgi’s is a fantastic feat. At only $6.99, I would already recommend the game to shooter enthusiasts, despite its minor flaws. Throw in the ability to create your own levels—albeit simple ones—and you’ve got something that could keep you busy for hours. And, yes, your levels can be shared and played online.

ProtoCorgi - Nintendo Switch

Let me stress that, despite my nitpickings, I had a fun time with ProtoCorgi. Shooters are an enjoyable way to game between things like Pikmin 4 or Tears of the Kingdom. They’re also meant to be challenging. In this case, I made it further along each time I played, which gave me a feeling of accomplishment and inspired me to keep trying.

Another positive feature of ProtoCorgi is its kid-friendly rating, which makes it accessible to all audiences. The high difficulty changes things a little, though, as the cuteness belies the onslaught of enemies waiting for you. An option to increase or decrease the difficulty could help balance things out a little.

Overall, ProtoCorgi is a fun shooter that’s deceptively difficult. The builder mode adds some longevity, especially at its budget price. The retro cartoony design is also great, creating an overall enjoyable shooter that stands out from the crowd.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Kirk, Justin and Katey talk about their time with Pikmin 4 so far.

Last week was all about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. This week begins with a look at the Famicom, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last week. We talk about some NES memories, including Konami’s Jackal – is it time for a revamp of this classic?

We spend a lot of time discussing Pikmin 4. Apart from the recent demo, we’re still fresh to this latest entry in the plant-based series, and Kirk and Jemma talk about the things they like and don’t like so far. It’s actually a terrific game (but why isn’t there a proper co-op mode?!).

We also give an update on our time in Hyrule, with Katey getting super close to finishing. And Jemma finally found a temple! Has she finished, though? You’ll have to listen to find out. We also talk about best fuses and gloom monsters, including Phantom Ganon. Yikes!

Apart from Pikmin 4, we’re playing plenty of other games this week, including a platformer called Garlic, a shooter called ProtoCorgi, and even the newly released app Pokémon Sleep.
